Publishers' Note:

July 16, 2009 - Congratulations President Barack Obama!...

President Barack Obama

The question is: "How can anyone predict the outcome of such a close Presidential election  in July 2008?"

Not only that "President" Obama is "likable" and represents "youth" and "charm" as well as "emotional" hope and "change", two buzz words that, by and large, voters "emotionally" fall for, but the tides of change are in his favor.

Senator John McCain is a great presidential contender and an American hero but he is "the past" and represents the past generations... and a continuation of the "status quo"... and, regardless of all the positive rhetoric we started hearing recently from republican operatives, the status quo just ain't working.  To list a few parameters:

1. One can call it all they wish: "slow-down" or "recession", but the reality for most Americans is that the economy is in depression the like of which America has not been seen since 1929.

2. With over a Million houses in foreclosures, we have an unprecedented mortgage crisis.

3. The crisis generated by the seizure of IndyMac bank by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)  which was prompted by withdrawals of 1.3 billion dollars made by the bank's customers since June is a mark of shame as The regulatory Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) was sleeping on the clock.  Such crisis will affect all Americans who will have to pick up the tab when all is done.  The dangerous signs are on the wall as this is just the beginning of what will have a domino effect one the entire U.S. and world financial markets.

4. The insane increase in gas prices, the "excessive" greed of speculators and oil companies, and the shameless inflation that is brought about.  Most importantly the $700 Billion Dollars "transfer of wealth" from the U.S. to oil producing companies including countries like Iran.

5. The unprecedented increase in food prices that is somehow "painful" to Americans but detrimental to poorer nations.

and the list goes on and on...

The summary of this analysis lies in that Senator McCain represents the "status quo" and President Obama represents "desirable change".

Politics
Syria and Lebanon will establish diplomatic ties

At last, following pressures from French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the Amir of Qatar,  Lebanon and Syria agreed to establish "long overdue" diplomatic ties and open embassies in Damascus and Beirut for the very first time since their independence from French colonial rule in 1943 and 1945, respectively.

The United States welcomed the agreement stating that Syria was "showing it is eager to engage with the international community."

This is seen as the preamble to allowing the Syrian Army to enter Lebanon and disarm Hizballah if Hizballah does not disarm willingly.

What happens following the entry of Syrian troops to Lebanon is being planned "behind closed doors" and is directly related to "Israel's" safety and security.

  • Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, heads the new 30-member national unity government. The Cabinet will serve only until the middle of next year, when elections may determine whether Hezbollah and its allies, which are supported by Iran and Syria, or the Western-backed coalition led by Saad Hariri takes control of the country in the coming years.

  • Hizballah gains political clout in Lebanon.

  • Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received a red-carpet reception in Paris after boycott was lifted.

  • President Sarkozy asked President Assad for help in easing the international standoff with Iran over its nuclear program. Assad, in his turn, asked France to help facilitate a peace deal between Syria and Israel.

  • President Sarkozy meets with several Mideast leaders including President Michel Sleiman,  Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Al-Thani and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Maroun Asmar Scheduled to Retire by Year's End

Maroun Asmar, the priest of the St Sharbel Church in Somerset, whose investiture to Monsignor was reported on LCNJ on Sunday April 22, 2008, is scheduled for mandatory retirement.

Asmar, 75, lives with his youngest son Paul who has Down Syndrome.  He has two other children Peter and Mary and 4 grandchildren.

In a correspondence with our friend Roukos Jacobs, the Church Council VP, he informed us that Asmar is "going to stay a bit longer due to the lack of priests in the US".

Reliable sources confirmed that his mandatory retirement should be no later than August 1, 2010.  This will be celebrated by everyone towards the end of April 2010.

Brigadier General Abdallah Habib Wakim

the prominent "Lebanese Army Poet" in New Jersey...

On June 1, 2008, Brigadier General Abdallah Habib Wakim, the famous "Lebanese Army Poet", graced New Jersey with his eloquent presence...  Reciting awe-inspiring poems "in Lebanese", he captivated the hearts and minds of a Lebanese audience that assembled to listen to this Lebanese icon.

Amongst the many from our community that attended, was Antoine Zihenni and his wife Rita who graced us with her powerful yet angelic voice... and  moved the General to join in the Dabkeh line...

It was a memorable Lebanese Sahra filled with talent, friendship and good emotions...

The Mystery of Divine "Balance"

In my life, I have met many wonderful people... memorable people I am very happy to have met; great acquaintances and genuine friends who appreciate me for me and for what I truly symbolize in a world of excesses, self-absorption and attention deficit...

At times, I have also encountered mean-spirited, controlling bullies, liars, and jealous people from within our Community who, at times, would take from me, "refuse" to give me anything in return,  or worse give me "false promises" to achieve their self-serving objectives, and... even worse "take advantage" of my resources to help them out, and then "underhandedly" do something to hurt me.

Yes, those "few" do exist in our Community...

Well... in my daily conversations with God, I was reflecting with Him and asked "whatever happens to those "few" people who were insensitive to me, who "lied" to me, who gave me "false promises", who bullied me, who hurt me, who did "underhanded" things to me?...

God does not respond right away..  but He always gives us "clear" signs that he is listening.... AND... responding!...

Today, I received a phone call from a person who has wronged me and that I had forgiven and remained acquaintances.  He called me to say that he has kidney cancer.

While God's response and "signal" were unmistakable, I could not help but feel sad for him.... such life changing event in his young life... and after I consoled him... I said a special prayer for him.

Life is a constant reminder as to how fragile we are... and that YOU need to do the right thing "right away"  a s you may never get a second chance to do the "right" thing by someone else... and you may never get a second chance to do "Divine-inspired" deeds..

Subject: "Monsieur Antoine" publishes a racist, misogynistic take on women and calls it a "joke"

At a time when the last thing Arabs or Arab Americans need is more antagonism or hostility leveled in their direction, "Monsieur Antoine" prints what has to be one of the most offensive, racist, sexist "jokes" ever published in a newspaper.

"Monsieur Antoine" mocks women of virtually all backgrounds; Lebanese, Palestinian, white, black, Irish, Mexican, Chinese, Indian, painting them all in the most stereotypical and misogynistic colors possible.

It is actually shocking in its blatant hatred and bigotry. I cannot think of one decent individual who would find anything remotely humorous about this "joke".
