What Does It Mean To Be
Lebanese?
What does it mean to be Lebanese? I remember awakening to church bells that gonged in my spirit, and rushing home to calls of prayer guffawing from minarets... from the very lungs of history. A history pruned with merciless shears, but rooted in passions the color of rubies, nurtured from the wells of hope, and forged with the determination of lava. Is this your story too? Taught the best, witnessed the worst, but survived to partake of a communion of your own making, biting into a wafer as flavored as the culture you long for? I was born in Beirut and I now live in the United States. Does this mean that my pillow is the East and my blanket the West? That I breathe the West and live the East? It means I am Lebanese!... A traveler.... a risk taker.... a poet when my pen inks memories of blood. A warrior when my pages sponge not hatred, but yearning for everything Lebanese. You are me and I am you. Not because we were born in the same wedge of the world. But because that wedge of the world —Lebanon— is dovetailed into our souls. Christ the Lord was a carpenter, so He built a new world. The Prophet Mohammad was a merchant, so He bartered a new future. We Lebanese of ancient flesh and fresh blood have authored the first alphabet, built the first ships, and colored the world purple. We are the messengers. The discoverers. The artists. Together we have survived the Romans and the Greeks, the English and the French, the Assyrians and the Syrians, civil conflicts, starvation, cholera and the plague.
We will endure… Always!....

Women Issues Rita and Myrna came to me... sadness in their eyes... They told me that they wanted help... for their hearts are broken... once again!... Rita and Myrna "choose" their Lebanese boyfriends from a pool of men who look "sexy" with their shirts off!... ...and this is what I said: "The truth I tell you, you will never find true love nor stability and everlasting love when you are in your 30's and still in that frantic chase running only after men who are "sexy"... Look for someone who is "nice"... Sexy looks and money fade away... relatively quickly... " You will find true love only when you open your heart and mind... slow down... and make plenty of time to look for and spend time with that one "not so sexy" nice man who is capable of giving you true love... one who will nurture you and enrich your life in so many ways... Soon your youth will fade away leading you to a lonely road and a life of emptiness, solitude and instability".
Lebanese Presidential Election is due to take place starting on September 25, 2007 and is predicted to drag until November 23, 2007 and beyond. If it drags beyond November 23, the date President Emil Lahoud's term expires, he is expected to declare a state of emergency and put the Lebanese armed forces in charge of security until a new president is elected. It is also expected that Prime Minister Fouad Saniora's government would take over presidential powers. Now... who will replace Emile Lahoud? and what will the next chapter of the Lebanese Book of Life unveil? While Nassib Lahoud is the main candidate placed in the public eye, it is predicted that, after an extended filibuster by rivaling groups, up until the eve of the expiry of Emile Lahoud's term and beyond, Michel Edde is largely expected to be elected the next President of Lebanon. Let's wait and see!...
سياسة لم تكد الإنتخابات النيابية الفرعية في لبنان تنتهي حتى أطلت الإنتخابات الرئاسية على نار حامية تختزل عجلة السباق إلى القصر الجمهوري بين قطبي الموالاة والمعارضة، علماً أن المعطيات المتصلة بالإستحقاق الرئاسي لا تشير إلى أن الأمور تظهر نضجاً عند الطرفين على الأقل في الوقت القريب... فكل تكتل يريد أن يكون الرئيس من كتلته أياً كانت المواصفات! هذا على صعيد الحسابات والمصالح والزعامات السياسية، إنما على الصعيد الشعبي اللبناني فالأمور تختلف كلياً، بمعنى أنه إذا سئل أي مواطن لبناني، عن مواصفات الرئيس الجديد، فيجيب بأنه يريد رئيساً لبنانياً... رئيساً يحصر ولاءه بلبنان لا غير، رئيساً يجمع ولا يفرق، رئيساً مترفّعاً، مستقيماً، فوق النزاعات السياسية، ولكل اللبنانيين... رئيساً يحترمه كل الشعب ويلجأ إليه في الأزمات الصعبة، أي رئيس حَكَم غير متحيّز لفريق ضد آخر، رئيساً حراً ديقراطياً، قادراً على توحيد لبنان واللبنانيين، رئيساً باستطاعته أن ينقل لبنان من الحضيض إلى الأوج، من مرحلة التبعية والإستزلام إلى مرحلة الهيبة والترفع وعزة النفس والقرار الحر. رئيساً على مستوى طموح شعبه، أي مثقف يفهم تطلعات وأحلام شبابه وينقلهم إلى مصاف الثورة العلمية والتقنية، ليجاري لبنان الدول الراقية والمتقدمة حيث الأمن والعلم والثقافة وحقوق المواطن وكرامته هي الأساس. هذا حلم، نعم... ويحق للبنانيين أن يحلموا... أن يحلموا بمعجزة تنقلهم من الإحتضار إلى الحياة، بمعجزة تنقل لبنان من الخراب والفوضى والمجهول إلى السلم والإستقرار والإزدهار... بمعجزة تُقنع اللبنانيين بأهمية انتمائهم إلى لبنان الوطن الواحد، مع أحقية الإحتفاظ بصداقاتهم العربية والإقليمية والدولية، بل وتحالفاتهم شرط ألا ّ يمس ذلك مصلحة لبنان وسيادته! إنما ما نراه اليوم وللأسف الشديد هو عبارة عن زعامات بل "وكالات حصرية"، لا تلبي مطالب المواطنين اللبنانيين، مجموعات مشردة ومنقسمة على ذاتها ومبعثرة. تتهم الواحدة الأخرى بالتبعية والإنتماء الخارجي... واحدة للمحور الأميركي – العربي، والأخرى للمحور الإيراني – السوري. ومن ثم "يهتدون" جميعاً وينصحون بضرورة "لبننة" الإستحقاق الرئاسي. وفي الواقع لا أحد يوحي بأنه صاحب قرار حر، ولا أحد يعرف كيف يُصنع الرئيس لبنانياً. فلو كان اللبنانيون جديين بانتخاب رئيس "صنع في لبنان" لما كنا شاهدنا إجتماعين للقوى المسيحية في لبنان، الأول في "معراب" والآخر في "الرابية"، لكن المسيحيين عموماً والمورانة خصوصاً منقسمون. ولو كانت القوى الوطنية تريد رئيساً ينصر لبنان ظالماً أو مظلوماً، لإختسرت المسافات بتشريع أبواب الحوار أمام جميع القوى اللبنانية التي تكوّن المجتمع اللبناني، لكن الحوار مفقود والتفاهم ممنوع. ولو كانت القوى الإقليمية والدولية تريد الخير للبنان واللبنانيين، لما تدخلت بشؤونهم الداخلية بل تركت لهم حرية الخيار في استحقاق وطني ومصيري، ولكن بدل أن يتمرد اللبنانيون على جميع الخيارات الخارجية، استمرت سياسة الإستئناس والإستقواء بالخارج على أبناء وطنهم. لماذا لا نؤمن بالحل اللبناني من أجل إنقاذ وطننا وهو يقف على حافة منزلق خطير يتحدد فيه مصيره؟ لماذا لا نحرر أنفسنا من النفوذ والتأثير الخارجي الذي لا يريد للبنان الخير ويدفعه الى الهاوية؟ فلماذا لا نحوّل هذا الإستحقاق الرئاسي من مناسبة للتحدي والإستفزاز والمواجهة إلى فرصة للتوافق والتآلف؟ بل لماذا الإصرار على إضعاف لبنان والقضاء على ما تبقى من هياكل الشرعية ومؤسسات الحكم فيه؟ مدّ الله بعمر لبنان، ووقاه عيون الحسّاد الفارغة.
After fondly watching the heartwarming
1964 video of Nathalie by Gilbert Bécaud, I remembered that he was born in
1927 and that would have made him 80 years old this October… Was it the sense of loss of a unique great artist… a great “friend” from 25 years ago… or was it simply another reminder of the fragility of life… a reminder of one certain thing in life… and that is... the unavoidable certainty of death?
Nutrition Fiber cannot be digested by the human body. Therefore, it can substantially minimize disorders of the colon (large intestines). A high-fiber diet will increase the bulk of the stool and soften it thereby reduce the pressure within the colon The main function of the colon is to complete the digestive process by removing excess water from food wastes entering from the small intestine. When waste passes through the colon too quickly, not enough water is absorbed resulting in diarrhea . On the other hand, when passage of waste is too slow, too much water is absorbed by the colon resulting in constipation, which often leads to straining during a bowel movement producing anal problems such as fissures and hemorrhoids... and worse, diverticula (small pouches protruding from the colon) usually in the "weakest" left lower side (sigmoid part of the colon which). Diverticula can be small, medium or large and are ballooning pockets resulting from an increased pressure to the walls of the otherwise smooth colon. Unless you are eating 30-35 grams of both soluble and insoluble fiber every day, you are setting yourself up for disaster.
