"Lebanon is more than a country, it is a message" - Saint Pope John Paul II

Publishers' Note:

Another message from the grave!... Dignified words eloquently spoken by Shaikh Bachir Gemayel over 25 years ago....Now such  mystifying grandeur, courage, clarity of purpose and dignity have all faded away as Lebanon is held hostage once again to terror... external evil forces... internal evil forces... corruption...  theft of public funds... the self interest of politicians... the never ending cycle of  childish bickering by feuding political factions...  the senseless political assassinations... and Lebanon finds itself at a very dangerous crossroads in its history... tangled in Presidential election politics that threatens the very existence of this small country of ours.

What Lebanon needs now more than ever is President Bachir Gemayel reincarnated...  A powerful President who has true love for Lebanon... who wants to work in Lebanon's best interest... most importantly, one who wants to preserve the "Lebanese way of Life"...

A President who will lead Lebanon to victory in this Presidential election...

A President who has the courage to speak loud and clear against external interference in Lebanon's affairs...

A President that will uproot terror and the terrorists in all their forms... disarm illegitimate militias, foreign and domestic...  empower the Lebanese Army to be the sole legitimate military force in Lebanon and give it 100% unhindered, non-politicized access to every inch of the Lebanese soil... and defend every inch of the Lebanese soil...

A President who will follow a calling greater than his self interest... and "choose" to leave a legacy whereby the Lebanese... ALL Lebanese... can live in harmony, freedom, security, dignity and prosperity....

and then... I woke up!...

It's Raining in Lebanon!

Lebanon fire

It might as well be acid rain even though it was not!... They are burning the quaint villages of Lebanon.  Close to 220 forest fires scorched broad swaths of Lebanon.

The land of splendor, forests and beauty is put on fire... While it is not unreasonable for anyone to suspect terrorism in this day and age, the reality is that a senseless practice among local communities in Lebanon is the use of fire to clear land of dried grass.

The accumulation of bio-mass and long periods of drought fuel these fires.

Several people suffered from smoke inhalation. Thousands of Lebanon's pine trees were charred, several cars were burned, and many of homes damaged or destroyed.  Firefighters battled wildfires in steep valleys in mountainous areas of Lebanon.

In certain areas, fires cut all means of communication to the centers -- no telephones and no internet.

Civil Defense workers and Lebanese Army helicopters, struggled endlessly to extinguish blazes in the North and in the Shouf Mountains.

Firefighting planes from Italy, Cyprus and Jordan

The fires were started overnight in the Shouf Mountains and in North and South Lebanon.

Over 3.5 Million square meters of woodland were destroyed in the Shouf and over 200,000 square meters in North Lebanon.

Gibran Khalil Gibran
In What Language did he opt to write?

In what language did our beloved Lebanese writer and philosopher Gibran Khalil Gibran write?

He did not write in Phoenician or colloquial Lebanese!... He wrote in Arabic.  He, as a Lebanese, was proud of his Lebanon... and he was proud of his Arabic language...

So should we!...

The Arabic language is not exclusive to the Islamic radicals and the terrorists!...

Are we Phoenicians or Arabs?...

Let us put an end to this senseless debate reminiscent of the Byzantine "sex of angels" debate.

The Lebanese ARE indeed Phoenicians!.... just like the Syrians are Phoenicians... and just like the Palestinians are also Phoenicians.  We, as Lebanese, do not have exclusivity on being Phoenicians!...

However, when was the last time you heard a Lebanese speak or write in Phoenician?

So, let us all agree that our Lebanese Heritage has very strong "positive" ties to the Arabic Language and the Arab Nation... Just take a look, to name a few, at our Lebanese books (think of Gibran Khalil Gibran and the many other Lebanese writers who wrote in Arabic)... our Lebanese Newspapers... and our Television news broadcasts....

When you think of Arabs, do NOT think of  those hypocrites or few evildoers who cowardly hide behind misguided doctrines in Islamic radicalism consciously twisted to promote terrorism and hate mongering against what they erroneously label as  "infidels" but rather of the glorious Arabs who, throughout history, have made, and continue to make thousands of great contributions to human civilization... from the Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3... ) used predominantly in the West... to Algebra... to Medicine... to Architecture (Arabesque)...  to Astronomy... etc... etc...

Consumer Protection
Shameless Greed!...
6 small loaves of Lebanese bread for $1.95?

Whatever happened to basic human decency?... or is it that greed is what governs some people's life nowadays?

A humble Lebanese reader of our online Lebanese Newspaper... a man with a modest income who has 5 young children and 7 mouths to feed sent us a moving complaint about which we felt very compelled to take action in the best interest of consumer protection, "fighting for what is right" and giving sincere support to the poorest in our community

In an area of North NJ known for its large modest and middle class Lebanese and Arab population, there seems to be one or more locations that shamelessly charge $1.95 to sell 5 or 6 measly loaves of small/medium size Lebanese bread.

Many of us know that 12 large loaves of mouthwatering "top quality" fresh Lebanese bread that come from Canada are sold for just $1.50 at decent Lebanese grocery stores... which is fair considering the added transportation cost all the way from Canada… but selling 6 loaves of small/medium pita bread for $1.95 is nothing short of "price gouging", to say the least.

Lebanese bread, or pita as widely known in the U.S., is a necessary daily nutrition for Lebanese and Arab children and it is disheartening to see greedy "wealthy" bakery owners squeezing $1.95 or more for 6 small loaves of bread  from struggling families with modest income.

Even though you are able to afford paying for such overpriced bread, it is still our duty, as a community, not to purchase any Lebanese bread that is flagrantly overpriced in order to support the rights of the modest income families in the Lebanese and Arab communities.

Considering that 12 large loaves of top quality Lebanese bread from Canada are sold for $1.50, a bag of six small/medium size Lebanese bread should not be sold for more than 50 cents, if that.

We can all "fight for what is right" and make a difference in helping bring the price of Lebanese bread down to fair prices for families with modest income,  by making a conscious effort, even if we can afford it, to avoid buying pita from any stores, bakeries and supermarkets that sell 5-6 medium size Lebanese bread for any amount larger than 50 cents or 99 cents.   We can also take a minute to fill complaint forms at any stores, bakeries and supermarkets and let them all know that we find $1.95 for 5-6 loaves of pita bread unjust and excessive.

It will probably not make a dent in the affluent existence of such wealthy and arrogant bakery owners but it will send a clear message to get them to charge fair prices for Lebanese bread.
