Q & A "I am a young Lebanese man living in the U.S. Do I always have to pay when I go out with a "female" Lebanese friend?" I received this question more than once in the past few years and I really tried to avoid answering it. However, the latest was from a Lebanese "John" who went out with a Lebanese "Jane" that I happen to know all too well... Enough said!... Jane had no romantic interest in John. After the "sahra" together was over, John felt that he got stuck with the large bill since Jane, although "just a friend", had no inclination to pay her own share... Her "excuse" was, all of a sudden, that "real" Lebanese men are "generous" and would never let a woman pay. I will simply post what I e-mailed to John after discussing the matter with Wafaa, a wonderful Lebanese woman of good judgment and whose son is close to John's age: "You know all too well that Jane was just being her manipulative self. A real Lebanese man MUST fully provide "generously" for his Lebanese wife and children in a stable and happy marriage. Otherwise, unless there is a well established and well defined romantic relationship as in an engagement or a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship, the Lebanese Jane has absolutely no "entitlements" to expect hard working young Lebanese men to pay for her meals. They are not her jackasses!... The bill can be split 50-50 with her or if, in a group, the bill can be divided amongst all "friends" equally. This way the Janes of the Lebanese community are never allowed to take advantage of fellow Lebanese. In short, genuine platonic friendships is one where you feel you can both enrich one another without any romance.... and without Jane making you feel like her meal ticket. Good luck. Let me know how your next encounter with "Jane" goes." Advertise your Lebanese and Arab Business Do you want close to 3 Million visitors every year to learn about your business? The husband replied: "Yes, dear, I do... that was the happiest hour of my life." _________ A guy walks past a mental hospital and hears a moaning voice "13...13...13... 13...". The man looked over to the hospital and saw a hole in the wall. As he looked through the hole, he gets poked in the eye. Expecting great feedback from the wives, the company sent out letters to all the wives of businessmen who had used the special companion rates, asking how they enjoyed their trip. Letters are still pouring in asking, "What trip?" _________ The new "not so bright" young intern stood before the paper shredder looking confused. "Do you need help?" asked a secretary walking by . "Hmmm" he replied, "Do you know how this thing work? "Simple," she said, taking the 50-page report from his hand and feeding it into the shredder. Little Annie replied, "Because people are sleeping" _________ A kindergarten teacher was walking around observing her classroom of children while they were drawing pictures. As she got to one girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was. The girl replied, "I'm drawing God." The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like." Without looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute." _________ "The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending; and to have the two of them as close together as possible". Global Warming On the one hand, I am not a big fan of Al Gore... never been... never will be... Although I am starting to see some redeeming qualities in him when I compare him to Hillary Clinton. Also, although I am environmentally conscious, I am far from being a tree hugger, never will be. On the other hand, I am a big fan of Sean Hannity... I like him... However, as an objective person, I must give credit where credit is due. Global Warming is a reality and we, as a human race, are contributing to such phenomenon. As early as 1994, I remembered the words of Al Gore who predicted, based on research and data by scientists, that, as a result of man-made pollution, NOx, CO2 and other emissions, the earth will experience substantial global warming (climate change) in the form of hurricanes, imbalance of seasons etc... and the earth temperature will eventually rise. I do not subscribe to Sean Hannity's theory that, as I understand it, global warming does not exist, that the climate is changing as part of the natural earth cycles and nothing we do can affect the earth... I also do not subscribe to Sean's ridiculing Al Gore's lifestyle. As a former Vice President, Al Gore is not an average person and should not be expected not to exceed the electric and gas bills of an average person. Finally, I don't see this as an argument to discredit the value of his efforts to raise awareness on global warming. Whether Climate change is man-made or natural, although I believe it is man-made, I am a supporter of capping emissions, within responsible financial expenditures, to protect our environment.
