The Innocence of Childhood

Many of you know and love my Princesse Nicole. One of her heartwarming funny moments was when  she was only 3 years old.

It was her bed time... She asked me if I could read her a bedtime story then handed me one of her cute books "Sleepy Dog".

She sat  next to me on her bed... and I started reading to her:

- "Sleepy dog... sleepy, sleepy, back to bed... Turn off the moon, turn off the light"

when suddenly Nicole managed to get off the bed walking out of her bedroom saying "I'll be right back"...

So, I asked her "Where are you going?"... and to that, she answered "I'm going to watch TV"...

Births & Birthday Announcements

As part of nurturing a sense of "Lebanese Community", I was asked if I could add a "Births & Birthday Announcements" Section to welcome  the tiny new members of our worldwide Lebanese community and make the older members a little more special on their special day...

So, please feel free to submit your "Birth & Birthday Announcements" with pictures and birth dates and locations, birth weigh and height, etc...  to BirthsAnnouncements@lcnj.com

A very funny friend of mine suggested that I should also add a "Conception Announcement" Section... and see what date of the year has the most conceptions... but it was not hard to figure out, Cupid!... Think "Lady in Red!".... so, I think I will just let this great idea just slide with a wicked smile...

The Prophetess

This is an excerpt from a book I started writing long ago... a heartwarming book that I have not finished because I refused to lock myself up for hours on end as a secluded writer... It is a book about an island, somewhere in space and time... an island of exuberant beauty and forgotten innocence... called Byblos...  On the island, lived a Prophetess whose name was Layla... who speaks of wisdom with vibrant energy and eloquent simplicity... Enjoy!...

"From distance oceans and ancient lands where crystal clouds embrace the sand, she emerged... with radiant memories of times gone by... times of pure crystal visions and ageless revelations...

It was the seventh day of the seventh month... the month of Tammouz... at the end of a beautiful summer day... moments before sunset.

She stood gracefully by the waters edge... as the waves of the ocean lapped against the sandy beach."

بَركي بْيُوعى الضَمير
A Disgrace in Lebanon!...

Did you know that, in Lebanon and worldwide, there are disenfranchised Lebanese children?... Yes... Lebanese children of a "Lesser God"!... Lebanese children deprived of their very basic human right?

Let me explain...

There is a despicable practice in our Lebanese social system and laws that brings much shame to a beautiful country with so much openness, splendor and intellectual competence...

Did you know that there are actual Lebanese children of all ages... each and every one of them is born to a real Lebanese parent -- 100% Lebanese parent --, with Lebanese blood running through their veins, with utter love for Lebanon and unmistakable passion for their Lebanese heritage... yet they all have one thing in common:  they ALL are deprived of their natural birth right... the right  to be Lebanese and carry the Lebanese citizenship?

What is wrong with this picture?

Unbelievable yet true!... The disgraceful reasoning behind this intellectually bankrupt legal practice is that a Lebanese female is simply not worthy nor capable of  passing Lebanese citizenship to her Lebanese children.

Can someone explain this cuckoolamunga rationale to me?  One thing for sure is that I cannot  for the life of me, even begin to understand it.

In Lebanon, an exceptional modern society that is supposed to honor its females... females that constitute over 50% of its population...  most of whom never carried guns nor sucked the blood of the Lebanese... mothers who took great care of all of us as young Lebanese children, are themselves "Children of a Lesser God"... not worthy to receive  a very basic human right to pass Lebanese citizenship to the children they conceive,  bear for 9 months, nurture with love and raise them in the best of our Lebanese traditions!...

Only the Lebanese male is worthy of passing Lebanese Citizenship to his children.  RA RA Simbumba!...

Well... excuuuuuuuuuuse me!... In my book, this translates to a severs case of mental retardation... with all due respect to those who truly suffer from mental retardation...  and flat out criminal!...

Wake up!... To date, Lebanese Citizenship rights are being shamefully denied to each and every Lebanese child born to a Lebanese mother unless she is married to a Lebanese husband.  Give me ONE valid justification as to why on earth can't a 100% Lebanese female, alone, as a Lebanese parent, give Lebanese citizenship to her children independently of her husband?

Such flagrant gender discrimination in a country where mothers are predominantly the main care providers of children, has unconscionably disenfranchised children of Lebanese descent for many generations.  Those children of Lebanese descent are counted amongst the 16 Million persons of Lebanese descent worldwide... Why not give them their basic RIGHT to Lebanese citizenship?

Do YOU... yes YOU...  believe this is the right thing for us as a Lebanese society to do?

Is this how we truly honor the Lebanese woman?

How much longer will YOU wait, remain silent and turn your head the other way pretending that you just cannot hear?

Oh!... Of course... This is NOT your problem!...  or is it?

Let me be the one who break it to you!... Your Lebanese daughter now has Lebanese Citizenship.  What will happen if she ever falls in love, as many do and as Nadwa and Samia and Wafa already did, and marries a wonderful non-Lebanese husband?

Guess what!... All her children,  your own Lebanese flesh and blood will be deprived of their basic right... to be Lebanese!...  They will be treated as outcasts in Lebanon and, at best, second class Lebanese citizens if they were ever allowed to live in Lebanon legally...

All those who remain silent and chose not to do anything immediately to correct this preposterous social miscarriage of justice  should hold their faces in shame.  Every voice counts...

Your comments  Your Proposals

Final Thoughts: As a small minority in the  world order, we, as a Lebanese community, a measly 16 Million worldwide, are doing ourselves the greatest injustice by not including each and every single good Lebanese in our Community...  especially when they have so much love for Lebanon and a true passion for our Lebanese heritage...

IMPORTANT - If you are a Lebanese, i.e. the child of a Lebanese mother, and you are deprived of your birth right to be 100% Lebanese, please e-mail us.

Many thanks for Joelle, Marie-Reine, Alice, Christina and so many others... for inspiring me and giving me their valuable input for this Article...
